About the Journal

«PALIMPSEST. A Literary Studies Journal» publishes researches in different areas of literary studies; among them history of Russian literature, history of Russia literary studies, literary criticism, theoretical problems of literary studies, problems of textual criticism, functioning of literature in social and cultural contexts, connection between literature and other forms of art, comparative literary studies, including comparisons between Russian and foreign literatures, Russian literature and folklore. The journal also considers discussion articles, archive materials, reviews, critical reviews, as well as messages, informing about different events in academic life.

By definition, palimpsest is parchment with a text, hand-written upon a previously inscribed and removed (scraped, washed off, etched out) text. Beside such a purely technical understanding, there are many other individual interpretations that metaphorically «expand» the original definition. E.g. Charles Baudelaire and Thomas de Quincey used the term «palimpsest» for a human brain, which, actually, consists of countless layers of thoughts, images and feelings. French literary theorist Gérard Genette considered all «second-level» literature, which is based on intertextual reflections and includes parody, travesty, caricature and pastiche, as a palimpsest. Palimpsest is known to emerge, when a new sequence of graphic symbols (letters, pictograms, drawings, hieroglyphs) is inscribed by someone upon previously deleted (e.g. scraped or washed off) symbols.

It is thus easy to arrive to a conclusion that palimpsest is a versatile concept, open to further transformations, which is able to become a description for a variety of phenomena, if need arises.

Our journal is connected with the concept of palimpsest not only by name. Its scientific strategy lies in constant motion above the usual and previously given. The articles, published in the journal, while “scraping” obsolete or not-so-well-grounded interpretations, will also be oriented on giving way to new texts, dialectically denying previous denials, when needed.

This is also true for the thematic focus of the «Palimpsest». Despite being mostly devoted to the history of Russian literature, its pages are open for all bordering scientific disciplines. A solution to the same problem in it may be subjected to repeated «rewriting», based on new facts, e.g. those found in the «field» of literary communications, as well as new methods, created in the workspace of other sciences.

In addition, the articles of «Palimpsest» will be selected in such a way as to erase the artificial opposition of «old» and «new», academically frozen and continuing to develop. Classic texts, which have long been the subject of examination and analysis, will have equal rights in the «Palimpsest» with the not yet «cooled down» works of the modern literary process.

To revive the scraped off, as well as to avoid the obsolete – this is the main purpose of the authors of the «Palimpsest»
