Abstract
The article examines the reception of literary Gothic in the novel by Vladimir Orlov Altist Danilov . The text is a kind of synthesis in which features of science fiction, fantasy, and gothic literature coexist at the same time. The author offers his interpretation of the artistic features of the "horror" prose. Orlov's work could be considered as a representative of Russian Gothic texts, first of all, because of the image of the main character - a demon. The prose writer, taking into account the "classic" versions of demonic characters (M. Bulgakov, I.V. Goethe, O. Wilde, R.L. Stevenson), rethinks the image of a "demon with a contract", who seeks to do evil, is endowed with infernal power, possesses supernatural abilities, but does not apply them in the human world. Moreover, after making a deal with the Netherworld Chancery, he does not lose his own soul, but gains it, which ultimately contributes to the final transformation of the demon into a human. However, if the main character does not correspond to the classic image of a demon-villain, then other characters are a vivid embodiment of world evil. The fact that the novel Altist Danilov is a representative of "horror" prose is also indicated by the key motives: death, duality, a deal with the devil, the connection of a demon with an earthly woman, transformation, duality. But Orlov again enriches traditional plots with innovative elements. The writer also transforms traditional Gothic toposes. So, the cave, outwardly possessing all the signs of a Gothic space, is a haven for a lonely wanderer and does not pose any danger. Urban toposes (apartment, theater), in turn, are places of concentration of crimes, they exert strong psychological pressure on the heroes. Orlov, following the neo-gothic tradition, also depicts an apartment building as a medieval Gothic castle.
