Abstract
The purpose of this comparative study is to analyze the teacher's image and the patterns of their professional life in the stories The Department (1977) by I. Grekova (Еlena Sergeevna Ventcel') and Caution! Evil teacher! (2012) Alexandra Madunts. The article considers the problems that attract the attention of both the writer of the 1970s and the author of the 2000s, which means that they are constant for the life of the university and the teacher. This is a question about grades, which creates a conflict between the teacher and the management; the problem of formal well-being, achieved through reporting that does not reflect the real knowledge of students. This is the problem of reforming the principles of teaching and knowledge evaluation, as well as the question of the endless stream of bureaucratic documentation in the work of a teacher. It also examines the changes in the life of the university and its staff, which are reflected by the comparison of the works of I. Grekova and A. Madunts. The study shows that the teacher's attitude to the problems of professional life has changed. The characters of the story Department are serious about solving issues related to work, they seek to substantiate the ways of reforming the life of the university, while the narrator in the story Caution! Evil teacher! comprehends such questions with obvious irony. This is explained by the fact that the teacher of the 1970s believed in the possibility of changing the education system for the better, and the teacher at the beginning of the 21st century lost this faith, although they retained moral responsibility for their work.
