Abstract
The article substantiates the allocation of stories about monasteries in a special genre-thematic group as part of Old Russian literature. Attention is drawn to the unification of elements of chronicle (letopis) and hagiographic genre forms in the stories about monasteries. In this context, the problem of genre synthesis in medieval literature is raised and an attempt is made to identify the conditions for the emergence of synthetic genres. The mechanisms of interaction of chronicle and hagiographic contexts in stories about monasteries are considered on the example of -The Story of the Foundation of Krestomarovskaya Cenobitic Hermitage? (the latter half of XVII century). The genre synthesis in -The Story...? is due to non-aesthetic factors: firstly, the ambivalence of the monastic space that combines time and eternity, and secondly, the variety of social functions of the text - the possibilities of using it as an edifying reading, a liturgical text, a legal document. The combination of genre components of the chronicle and the life (zhitiye) is realized at different artistic levels of the text, and this combination occurs in different proportions. Stylistically, -The Story...? completely inherits the hagiographic tradition: with the exception of a few inclusions of chronicle techniques, -The Story...? consists of hagiographic topoi; the image of the author is also built from elements of hagiographic topics. The plot-compositional organization of -The Story...? is more correlated with the chronicle genre, as evidenced by such features of the narrative as fragmentarity, strictly observed chronological principle, the absence of a clearly defined ending and openness 24 to supplement with new fragments. The plot structure gives a chronicle character to the artistic time continuum, which combines the autonomous episodes of the lives of the inhabitants of the monastery into a single, chronologically ordered stream of -earthly? time
