In accordance with plans to prepare a scientific edition of the complete works of Boris Sadovskoy, we continue our study of his archival texts. The first publication of the novel The Black Ring unknown to researchers is given with commentary; the authorized manuscript of the story is kept in the collection of the A.F. Marx publishing and printing association at the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art. The intertextual links between the story The Black Ring and the novel The Fiery Angel by V. Briusov are also revealed. The author points out the similarities in terms of poetics, as well as the fundamental differences due to the artist's individuality. The author notes that The Black Ring is written in a stylization style, which is typical for Sadovskoy. It is argued that the peculiarity of The Black Ring is that its source of stylisation is not a single transformed text, but a cycle of texts all belonging to different cultural traditions. Eventually this predetermined the story's eclecticism which is its main artistic flaw. In this context Fet's poetry is emphasized, as well as some important for understanding the meaning of The Black Ring and some realities of the author's creative and personal life associated with the circle of characters in the work (V. Akhramovich, Sadko, V. Khodkevich, L. Likhutin). The genesis of the subtitle The Black Ring is discussed in detail. It is pointed out that, to a certain extent, the «protograph» of the latter was the novel The Silver Prince by A. K. Tolstoy. Sadovskoy considered this writer's legacy as a whole to be iconic for him. And it seems symbolic that the perceptive views on Tolstoy's artistic method («spiritual conservatism») expressed in his critical article can in some sense be applied to his own work |
