Abstract
The article discusses the literary works of S.I. Sukhikh, professor of the Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod, dedicated to the work of M. Sholokhov. Prof. Sukhikh gives a comprehensive review of several important issues of Sholokhov studies that are still relevant to this day: disputes about the authorship of "And Quiet Flows the Don", genre features of this novel, its composition, image system, and ideological component. The author pays special attention to the position of S.I. Sukhikh on key issues: historical approaches to the study of the novel "And Quiet Flows the Don", the image of Grigory Melekhov as a unique image for world literature of a folk truth-seeker, a representative of the non-privileged class, the significance of the genre definition of "And Quiet Flows the Don" as a tragedy in the form of an epic. All these features are supported by a thoughtful interpretation of the novel, referring not only directly to the text of "And Quiet Flows the Don", but also to other works of M. Sholokhov. S.I. Sukhikh was ready for a constructive scientific dialogue, free from personal unjustified hostility to the author of "And Quiet Flows the Don". An appeal to the works of S.I. Sukhikh can be useful not only for literary critics, but also for a wide audience, including high school students, philologists, journalists, literature teachers, and anyone interested in the work of M. Sholokhov. The analysis of the monographs of S.I. Sukhikh devoted to the work of M. Sholokhov yields the conclusion that Prof. Sukhikh has made a significant and still underestimated contribution to the study of the "And Quiet Flows the Don" author’s legacy, and that it is necessary to republish the scientific works of S.I. Sukhikh.
