Abstract
The article considers «Travel letters from England, Germany and France» by N.I. Grech in the context of existing traditions, formed by the XIXth century in Russian travel literature. Travelogue as a genre was at its prime at that time, various works appeared written by professional writers and also by officers or members of expeditions. The article noted works published by Grech in his magazine -Son of the Fatherland? that contained prerequisites for the following development of the genre. The work analyzes specific features peculiar for travelogues of the XIXth century that demonstrate their difference from later ones and also from previous travels of the XVIIIth century. Gradual transformation of the genre of travelogue at that time is demonstrated in the article, factors enabling its development are considered. Grech's travelogue considers and reacts to the main events happening in literature and in social life. The most significant travelogues of that period are studied, the differences in author's approaches are noted. The article represents a wide context including literary works written by famous authors and works created by unknown travellers or military men. The article researches Grech's interest to the examination of national and cultural identity by means of literary travel, as well as the scale of depiction of European life, study of -the own? and -the Other? space.
