Abstract
The study aims at solving a relevant research issue to recreation and description of Nikolai Karamzin’s circle of contacts. The paper focuses on the historiographer’s relations with count Ioannis Kapodistrias, the diplomatic official, one of the most influential ministers of the Russian government. We summarize information about the biography of Ioannis Kapodistrias, about his public reputation and political views. We also mention that personal qualities, the nature of political views, and the sociopolitical activities of Kapodistrias determined the positive attitude of Karamzin. We trace the history of communication between the historiographer and the minister based on the letters and contemporaries’ records. Our research begins from the moment they met in 1816. Count Kapodistrias is the only representative of the high officials who became part of the historiographer's close circle. We also mention that Karamzin and the minister had warm relations and together took charitable actions: they help those who turn to them for help. Based on personal letters from Karamzin, we recreate the image of Kapodistrias in the perception of the historiographer, who sees him as an intelligent and kind minister and his -good friend?. Karamzin appreciates his human qualities and considers him one of those rare people that Russia needs. Moreover, Kapodistrias embodied the Karamzin ideal of a person in power: a wise and kind man, a patriot, a person who does not defy his principles. As a result of the analysis of the Kapodistrias letters, we conclude that close relations with Karamzin meant a lot to the minister. And in the late period of letter exchange, the minister and historiographer worldview and world perception are very close. In conclusion, we note that the understanding of the Karamzin and Kapodistrias relationship makes it possible to reveal in a new way the features of historiographer self-awareness in the last decade of his life. The materials presented in the paper will form the basis of the reference paper for the dictionary and reference book -Nikolai M. Karamzin and his circle of contacts?.
